The 12 months of the Hijri calendar

The Islamic year has 12 lunar months of 29 or 30 days, about 354 or 355 days in total. That is roughly 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, so Islamic dates move earlier through the seasons each year. The four sacred months are highlighted.

What is the Hijri calendar?

The Hijri (Islamic) calendar is a purely lunar calendar. Its year 1 AH begins with the Hijra, the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ migration from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE. The caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) set it as the Muslim era, and 1 Muharram was fixed as the start of the year.

Each month begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon (hilal). The Islamic day starts at sunset (Maghrib), not midnight, which is why a night such as Laylat al-Qadr belongs to the day that follows it.

Umm al-Qura vs. moon sighting

Saudi Arabia uses the Umm al-Qura calendar for official and civil dates, and this page uses it for the dates shown. It is calculated in advance from astronomical rules based on the moon’s position relative to Makkah. The start of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and Dhul Hijjah is confirmed by the Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia, based on actual moon sighting, so the announced date can differ from the calculated one by one day. Frequently asked questions

What is today’s Hijri date in Jeddah?

It is shown at the top of this page and updates automatically each day, using the Umm al-Qura calendar and Jeddah time (Arabia Standard Time, UTC+3).

Why does the Hijri date sometimes differ by a day from other websites?

Different countries and organizations follow either calculation or local moon sighting, so the start of a month can differ by one day between them.

How many days are in a Hijri month?

29 or 30 days, depending on the moon. A Hijri year is 354 or 355 days.

Which months are sacred?

Muharram, Rajab, Dhul Qa’dah and Dhul Hijjah, as stated in the Qur’an (9:36) and the Sunnah. Fighting was forbidden in these months, and good deeds carry special weight.

When is Laylat al-Qadr?

It falls in the last ten nights of Ramadan, most likely on the odd nights (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, 29th). Its exact night is not specified, and many Muslims look for it on the 27th night.

How is the Hijri calendar used with prayer times?

Prayer times depend on the sun, so they follow the Gregorian date, while the Hijri calendar tells you the month and date for fasting, Eid and other occasions. During Ramadan, Fajr marks the start of the fast and Maghrib marks iftar.

Dates are calculated using the Umm al-Qura calendar. Always confirm the start of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and Dhul Hijjah with the official announcement from Saudi Arabia, as these are decided by moon sighting. Observances marked “disputed” are practiced by some Muslims and not by others.
